It's been 5 years since we last offered Spain and Portugal. This will be different from our last trip too featuring stops in Seville, Lisbon and Porto with Porto being a new destination. It will make for an amazing journey for sure.

First up is Seville, a city you are sure to fall in love with as I did. Our hotel is perfectly situated within easy walking distance to all the attractions including the wonderful palace of Alcazar and the Catedral de Seville and Giralda Tower, the largest Gothic building in the world and the third-largest church in Europe. It is truly impressive.

According to legend, Seville was founded by Hercules and its origins are linked with the Tartessian civilisation. It was called Hispalis under the Romans and Isbiliya with the Moors. The high point in its history was following the discovery of America in 1492. For all its important monuments and fascinating history, Sevilla is universally famous for being a joyous town. While the Sevillians are known for their wit and sparkle, the city itself is striking for its vitality.

From Seville we plan to offer a couple of wonderful day trips including Ronda or even a trip across the Strait of Gibraltar to visit Tangier. Ronda was one of our favorite towns on our last visit to Spain.

Ronda sits in the heart of the Serrania de Ronda, about 100kms from the city of Malaga and with a population of approximately 35,000 inhabitants. Surrounded by lush river valleys and sitting above a deep ravine, it is a place that literally takes your breath away when seeing it. Anyone who has been lucky enough to visit Ronda will understand its appeal. It is one of the most beautiful and visited cities in Spain (the third most visited city in Andalucia).

Guarding the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier has for centuries been Europes's gateway to Africa. Its blend of cultures and influences is unique in Morocco – for much of its history it wasn't even governed by Morocco. Tangier is built on the slopes of a chalky limestone hill. The old town (medina), enclosed by 15th-century ramparts, is dominated by a casbah, the sultan’s palace (now a museum of Moroccan art), and the Great Mosque. European quarters, whose populations have declined considerably since integration with Morocco in 1956, stretch to the south and west. Tangier has been the summer site of the Moroccan royal residence since 1962.

Our next stop is Lisbon, one of the world's great historical cities, with characteristic and surprising sights, cultural treasures, and a beautiful setting that make it a paradise for walkers and photographers. Lisbon is Europe's second-oldest capital (after Athens), once home to the world's greatest explorers like Magellan and Prince Henry the Navigator, becoming the first true world city, the capital of an empire spreading over all continents, from South America (Brazil) to Asia (Macao, China; Goa, India). It's one of the world's greatest natural harbors which attracted different civilizations, now reflected in its architecture and culture recalling Phoenicians, Celts, Romans, Visigoths and Moors. A charming visual time-warp with medieval village-like neighborhoods.

Lisbon also offers World Heritage monuments and singular museum treasures. Our stay will be at a beautiful, 5-star hotel in the city centre that will make a perfect base to explore many of Portugal's most outstanding towns and villages. From Evora and Obidos to fairytale palaces in one of Europe's most romantic towns (Sintra), we will have 4 nights and 3 full days for our day tours. Again we will hire our private guide and motor coach to enable us to offer optional tours with freedom and flexibility at an amazing group rate that you have come to appreciate.

Finally, we spend the last 3-nights in Porto,a captivating city, which perfectly blends history, traditions and modern Portuguese culture. Set on an undulating landscape, Porto provides architectural wonders, a quaint old town, stunning vistas and beautiful beaches. Throw in its famed Port producing industry and it is easy to see why this charming city is fast becoming a top rated holiday destination.

We will set up a tour to visit the historic city center, walk along Ponte Luis I Bridge, take a cable car ride for view of the Douro river and Ribeira (historical city center) and cruise the Douro river. Check out this sample itinerary.

We can also take some wonderful day trips. Here are some of our possiblities that we will do more research on as we get closer:

Day trip to Guimarães - Guimarães is regarded as the ‘birth place of Portugal’ as it was the first capital city of Portugal during the 12th century, and was also the birth place of Portugal’s first king; Afonso Henriques. The city boasts a medieval castle, restored gothic palace, numerous pretty squares and a cable car ride to the top of Penha Hill. For a guide to a day trip to please click here. to Guimarães

Day Trip to Braga - Braga is the religious centre of Portugal and within the compact historic centre are numerous ornate churches and beautiful baroque styled houses. Just outside of Braga is the wonderful Bom Jesus do Monte, a charming church that is situated on top of a hill and is reached via elaborate staircases, which represent the steps to heaven. The Bom Jesus do Monte is considered as the finest tourist attraction in the region surrounding Porto. For a guide to a day trip to Braga please click here.
